For as long as humans have been roaming the planet, there’s been fire. Next to the increased cognitive abilities that have allowed us to develop advanced concepts such as language – and thus a way to effectively communicate with one another – the discovery of fire was a defining feature that set us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom.
And while fire has been a constant presence since the dawn of time, the ways in which we’ve utilized its warmth and enjoyed its beauty have shifted over generations. What was once a mere pit in the ground is now an immaculate centerpiece to a main living area…and even that has changed in capability and design following technological advancements and the popular home decor and styling trends of the ages.
Let’s take a look a quick look at the evolution and history of fireplace and chimney design; perhaps it might even inspire you to consider upgrading your own hearth! And that’s why we’re here: to make your fireplace dreams a reality. Book your appointment online or by calling 513-727-0994.
What Is the History of the Fireplace Hearth?
In the beginning, fire was used for a variety of purposes: it provided light, warmth, protection, and the ability to cook food. This was the prehistoric era, when fires were built directly on the ground, in the center of caves and other dwelling spaces. But, as humans began to settle and construct more permanent structures and establish civilizations, the concept of a hearth became more defined. Known colloquially as the New Stone Age (or the Neolithic period), this time period saw the advent of all kinds of new and better stone-made tools, the discovery of farming and agriculture, and the power of community. Fires started being built in the central areas of homes and served as the focal point for gatherings.
People all over the world enjoyed the numerous benefits brought forth by the ability to host fires within their homes and just like everything else we’ve learned to optimize, indoor fires were no different. Take the introduction of the chimney: up until about the 12th century, homes and other structures were built with a hole in the roof to allow for ventilation, or else the fire’s exhaust and other harmful byproducts would just fill the room. The development of the chimney allowed for this smoke to be effectively vented outside, greatly improving indoor air quality and making indoor heating and cooking much safer and more efficient. This invention was pivotal in advancing the possibilities of domestic architecture and the continued evolution of fireplace and hearth designs.
How Have These Appliances Changed Over Time?
It wasn’t until the Renaissance that fireplaces became more refined and decorated with ornate designs and materials – further emphasizing the hearth as a home’s focal point. People began to elaborately decorate their mantels and soon it became a symbol of societal status. Eventually, accessories like firebacks and metal grates were invented, cast iron was discovered to be an excellent material for conducting and hosting flames, and the 20th century introduced the concept of heating with wood alternatives like gas and (quite a bit later) electricity.
These days, “hearth” is used to define a wide variety of heating appliances. From traditional wood-burning fireplaces to sleek, modern gas inserts and stoves, the marriage of advanced technology and human innovation have reinvigorated the way we host fires in our homes. Think of the traditional masonry chimney. While one of the most notable revolutions to this original structure might’ve come from Benjamin Thompson (also known as Count Rumford) with the invention of the Rumford fireplace way back in 1796 – a design that altered the size and shape of the firebox to encourage better radiant heat production – it wasn’t until the 1940s that the structures were required to include a flue liner. And the prefabricated chimney? That wasn’t even invented until sometime during the 1960s.
