What’s the Difference Between a Chimney Crown and a Chimney Cap?

There are a few things as homeowners that we tend to overlook. Like our chimney! Maybe it’s because we only use it a few months out of the year so it’s out of sight, out of mind. It might even be because of its sheer height that makes it impossible to look at or try to understand. Whatever the reason, most people just don’t know much about their chimney and fireplace system.

Thankfully, you have us! Mid-Valley Chimney has close to 20 years of experience in providing chimney and fireplace services. So we know a thing or two about chimneys. You can count on us to answer all of your chimney related questions. To start, let’s get right into what the difference is between a chimney crown and a chimney cap.

What Is a Chimney Crown?

A chimney crown is the top level of a masonry chimney and is the basic first line of defense for protecting your chimney from water. It is constructed using cement, and is slightly sloped to help direct most of the water away from the chimney.

Sometimes, a chimney crown is installed using leftover mortar that was used in between the bricks of the chimney. While mortar is the perfect material to bind bricks together, it should not be used for chimney crowns. That’s because mortar isn’t as strong as concrete. Being exposed to high temperatures and the elements causes mortar to deteriorate quickly.

Speaking of the elements, because the chimney crown takes a lot of abuse from the weather and environmental conditions, it is prone to developing cracks over time without proper maintenance. If these cracks go undetected for too long, the brick masonry will begin to soften, deteriorate, and eventually break completely off the chimney. While the chimney crown does seal most of the chimney, the flue is still exposed. Which is why having a crown alone isn’t enough protection to keep all water and debris out of the chimney.

What Is a Chimney Cap?

Imagine the chimney cap as a hat. It sits on top of the chimney, directly over the flue to help prevent water, birds, small animals, and debris from getting inside. A chimney cap is mounted above the crown and is often made of stainless steel, aluminum, copper, or galvanized steel. It has almost a cage-like appearance to not only keep things out of your chimney system, but to also allow smoke to vent without the risk of flying embers.

While the chimney cap is considered an optional accessory, it is highly recommended that you have one so your flue and fireplace aren’t exposed to outside elements. Water can wreak havoc on your masonry, and even rust the metal components in your chimney such as the damper or smoke shelf. This leads to more expensive repairs down the road. Chimney caps are relatively inexpensive so there’s really no reason you shouldn’t have one.

How Often Should Chimney Caps & Chimney Crowns Be Inspected?

According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), chimneys and all of their components should be inspected at least once a year. Regular inspections are important because they can help identify any signs of damage or deterioration early on, allowing for timely repairs and replacements. Like we mentioned above, the longer an issue goes undetected, the worse the damage gets, and the more expensive the repairs can be for you to cover.

Most people prefer to have their chimney and fireplace inspected before the start of the heating season so they are confident that their fireplace is safe to use. However, if there are any repairs that need to be made, the offseason would allow us enough time to make any necessary repairs before you need to use your fireplace. But to us, anytime is a good time to schedule an inspection with Highpoint Chimney Services.
